Barcelona

Barcelona may be known as a backpackers paradise, but even if you are no longer the kind of traveler who likes to stay in hostels there is still plenty to see and do in Barcelona. In fact, the primary reason for the city’s notoriety as a backpacker’s destination is that you can enjoy Barcelona without spending a fortune. Well, you could spend a fortune if you want to, but why bother, when there are so many great and cheap hotels in Barcelona to choose from?

Keep in mind that you may see the word “hostal,” with an “a,” as much as you see the word “hostel” – and these things are very different. Hostels offer primarily cheap dorm-style accommodation for backpackers, while hostals are more like guesthouses. They should be considered along with the cheap hotels in Barcelona, because they are often more charming than hotels and a little less expensive as well.

Central Barcelona has lots of budget hotels to choose from, although if you are not into the late-night party scene anymore you might want to steer clear of the hotels that are along Las Ramblas. Of course, this city is known for its nightlife, so you may have to adjust your clock a bit to get a little of the local night time flavor!

Some hotels to consider for your stay in Barcelona are the Hotel Espana (located in Barcelona’s city center, next to Las Ramblas and a short walk from most sights), Hotel Cuatro Naciones (right on Las Ramblas and offering free WiFi), the Medium Confort Hotel (in the heart of the city’s shopping district, and the rooms all have “background music” – one assumes it can be turned off), Hotel Antibes (close to the bullfighting ring and Sagrada Familia) and the Hotel Amrey Sant Pau (also not far from Sagrada Familia).
