Singapore

Is it possible that Singapore aims to confuse by being both a city, an island, and a country? The good news is that no matter what you call it, or how you think of it, you are at least talking about the same place as everyone else who talks about Singapore. Unfortunately, cheap hotels in Singapore may not be as common as you might think – especially since we are talking about Southeast Asia here – but you can still find them.

While the cheapest of the cheap hotels in Singapore are probably not the ones you want to be staying in (they are the kind most often rented by the hour, not the night or week!), there are some smaller budget and boutique hotels which are not too expensive and might be just what you are looking for. You can find these in the areas along the Singapore River and also in Singapore’s Chinatown.

Travelers coming to Singapore to take advantage of the major shopping opportunities will want to stay either close to the malls and shops on Orchard Road, or near a light rail station so they do not have to walk far with heavy shopping bags. Unfortunately, the majority of the cheap hotels in Singapore are located a bit further away from the shops. The hotels at the western end of the river are great for the budget, but not so convenient to get to and from. Chinatown might be a good alternative to look in. The areas around Balestier and Geylang have lots of budget hotels, but they are generally not as nice to be in, so proceed there with caution.

Some cheap hotels in Singapore worth checking out are Hotel 81 Palace (192 rooms, in Geylang district, on-site restaurant/cafe/pub, laundry service available), The Fragrance Hotel (82 rooms, WiFi available, free drinks & snacks, laundry service available, 20 minute drive from Orchard Road), The Inn at Temple Street (in Chinatown, five restored shophouses turned into this hotel, light rail station right behind the hotel), Hotel 1929 (in Chinatown, on-site restaurant, laundry service available, flat screen TVs in the rooms), and Carlton Hotel (walking distance of major attractions, 630 rooms, swimming pool, fitness center).
