Cyprus

The island of Cyprus is kind of like two countries in one, since the two regions on the island are governed by separate nations. The northern portion of the island (the smaller portion) is called the Turkish Republic of Northen Cyprus and is administered by Turkey, while the southern part of the island (the part which is most visited by foreigners) is called the Republic of Cyprus and is administered by Greece. Cyprus is a popular tourist destination, known primarily for the beauty of its beaches, and while there are lots of high-end accommodation options on the island you can also find cheap hotels in Cyprus if you are traveling on a budget.

The city of Larnaca has lots of hotels to choose from in all price ranges, including some of the cheap hotels in Cyprus. Nicosia, the island’s capital city, has lots of hotels as well – but they tend to be more for business travelers than tourists, so you may find the deals here are on weekends rather than during the week. On the Turkish side, the city of Kyrenia is a popular tourist destination, and this beach town has plenty of accommodation options. You should know that while there are no hostilities between the two regions of Cyprus at the moment, there is a UN “green zone” between them, and crossing from one to the other is not always easy. Most visitors stay on one side or the other.

Cyprus is littered with historic monuments and sites, on both sides of the UN green zone, so anyone who gets excited about archaeological ruins will be thrilled by Cyprus. Because it is a Mediterranean island, it is also understandably famous for its beaches – although it is not the kind of beach party destination island that some other Mediterranean islands have become. In fact, many of the coastal areas are relatively quiet and peaceful, not at all like the beach towns with rows upon rows of chairs and umbrellas that you might find elsewhere. Unfortunately, budget travelers will likely still need to spend a bit to rent a car on Cyprus, as public transit is not terribly extensive or efficient.

Some of the cheap hotels in Cyprus you might want to look into for your trip are Sandbeach Castle Hotel (in Larnaca, family-run hotel, 24 rooms, all rooms with private balcony, on-site restaurant & bar, tours and excursions booked at discounted prices, 5 minutes from town center, right on beach), Frangiorgio Hotel Apartments (in Larnaca, free continental breakfast, on-site cafeteria & bar, 1-2 bedroom apartments available, laundry service available, all rooms with private balcony, 24 apartment rooms), Averof Hotel (in Nicosia, 25 rooms, in residential area, short drive from downtown, free continental breakfast, private balconies in some rooms), Centrum Hotel (in Nicosia, 40 rooms, in downtown area, free WiFi & internet access, on-site restaurant), and Club Simena Hotel (near Kyrenia, 52 rooms, all rooms with a balcony or terrace, all rooms with view of Five Finger Mountain or Mediterranean Sea, on-site restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, WiFi access available, game room, children’s play area, mini-golf course, laundry services, massage services & sauna).
