Cologne

While many people plan a trip to Germany with only the biggest tourist destinations of Berlin and Munich in mind, the pretty city of Cologne is well worth a visit. It is Germany’s fourth-largest city and boasts a beautiful cathedral, a picturesque riverfront, a host of great museums, and what seems like more than its fair share of breweries and fun bars. The city center is very walkable, even for a city of this size, but there is also an excellent public transportation network just in case you cannot find cheap hotels in Cologne within walking distance of everything you want to see and do.

Arguably the most famous attracton in Cologne is its cathedral, known locally as the Dom, which rises above the skyline. It is in the old town area, which is called the Alstadt and which is easily the most charming part of the city. Of course, in a city this big and this popular, the most charming part is also going to be where you are less likely to find cheap hotels in Cologne. But if you are visiting in the off-season you have a better chance of getting a great deal.

You can also find more cheap hotels in Cologne if you look further from the city’s historic center. You do not, however, have to head into the suburbs to find a decent deal. No matter where you are looking, be sure to check for local transportation connections close by, because this will be your link to the historic city center and everything on your must-see list. If the subway or tram stop is too far from your hotel to walk, then it almost does not matter how good of a deal you are getting on your room.

Some of the cheap hotels in Cologne you might want to check out are Hotel DomBlick (in northern part of Old Town, near Dom and train station, WiFi available, private underground parking available, 23 rooms, private bathrooms, cable TV, some rooms with cathedral view, breakfast buffet available), Hotel Weber (in southern part of Old Town, some rooms with private bathrooms, some rooms with no en suite bathroom, all rooms with cable TV, free breakfast, WiFi access available), Hotel Chelsea (modern boutique hotel, 38 rooms, free WiFi, some rooms with access to rooftop terrace, private bathrooms, breakfast buffet available for an additional fee), and Hotel Europaischer Hof am Dom (in northern part of Old Town, rooms feature private bathrooms, cable TV, WiFi access available, on-site lounge).
