The Central American country of Guatemala boasts a rich Mayan cultural history, bustling modern cities, impressive Spanish colonial architecture, lots of volcanoes, a picturesque lake, and coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. In short, there is something for just about everyone in this little country, making it an excellent tourist destination. And while there are certainly upscale and luxury hotels in the more popular areas, there are – thankfully – plenty of cheap hotels in Guatemala as well.
In fact, there may be more cheap hotels in Guatemala than high-end hotels, because this is one of those countries that is still relatively cheap for most people to travel in. Even in the capital city of Guatemala City, there are lots of budget accommodation options. And the further you get from the beaten track, the less you will even see four- and five-star hotels even available. The one thing you should be aware of if you are trying to stick to a budget is that if you look like a tourist, you may very well be charged more for basically the same service than if you were a local. So be sure to check around and bargain if you think you are being overcharged.
