Andorra

There are plenty of cities in the world that you could miss if you blinked while driving through them – but countries that small? Well, there are only a few – and Andorra may well be one of them. This tiny country sits in the Pyrenees mountains on the border between Spain and France, and has a population of roughly 70,000 people. And despite the fact that this is such a small country, it still draws a good number of tourists every year. Unfortunately, however, you may not find much in the way of cheap hotels in Andorra – unless you can adjust your definition of “cheap” a bit.

Andorra is one of the countries with the designation as a “tax haven,” so this tends to be something of a playground for the wealthy rather than a budget backpacker tourist destination. Still, if you can move what you mean by “cheap” up a few euro, you can still find a few cheap hotels in Andorra – or at least hotels that are a bit cheaper than some of the ultra-luxury resort hotels in the country! Because of its mountain location, Andorra is popular with both winter tourists and summer tourists for the wintertime skiing and summertime hiking, so there is not much of a “low season” here, either. Book early to secure a budget room.

The great outdoors is the primary focus in Andorra. There are two main ski areas which are magnets for ski lovers in the winter – Vallnord and Grandvalira. The skiing here is incredibly popular, so if you are hoping to enjoy the slopes yourself you will need to book a hotel room well in advance – especially if you are really hunting for a bargain. In the summer, skiiers give way to hikers who take advantage of the many excellent treks in the beautiful Pyrenees. You will also want to visit the historic center of the capital city, Andorra La Vella, if for no other reason than it is a good break from all that physical activity!

A few of the cheap hotels in Andorra you might want to look into are Hotel Valmar (in Andorra La Vella, bed & breakfast rates available, single rooms through quad rooms available, free WiFi access, on-site bar), Hotel Les Fonts (in old town of Andorra La Vella, on a pedestrian street, 40 rooms, all rooms en-suite, private & secure car parking available, pets allowed, breakfast available for a fee, on-site bar), Hotel Coma (in Ordino, founded in 1932, parking available, on-site bar & restaurants, 2 tennis courts, mini-golf course, swimming pool, childrens play area, gardens), Husa Xalet Besoli (10km from Andorra La Vella, near Pal-Arinsal ski area, 33 rooms, on-site bar & restaurant, game room, private car parking available, swimming pool, pets allowed, laundry service, ski transportation available), and Husa Centric (in Andorra La Vella, 73 rooms & 7 junior suites, some rooms with private terrace, free WiFi access, on-site bar & restaurant, laundry service).
