Denver, otherwise known as “The Mile-High City,” is not only the capital city in Colorado, it is also a major tourist destination in the American Southwest. It is an exciting city to explore all on its own, and also serves as a great base from which to explore the surrounding cities – not to mention the amazing Rocky Mountains nearby. Visitors find the city to be an interesting mix of a distinctly western history and a modern cultured environment, and visitors are also pleased to find that there are plenty of cheap hotels in Denver to choose from.
The metropolitan area around Denver is big enough that you would think you would need to rent a car to get around, but unless the cheap hotels in Denver that you are looking at to stay in are way outside the downtown area you can probably avoid having a car at all. The downtown area is compact and much of it is easily navigated on foot; for the rest, the city has an efficient public transportation system that includes light rail and buses. Many visitors, however, are in the area primarily for outdoor pursuits – and with good reason. The skiing around Denver is fantastic, and in warmer months there is plenty of hiking and biking to enjoy. Visiting Denver without taking advantage of the great outdoors may be considered something of a small crime to some locals.
