Montreal

To get a taste of France without subjecting yourself to the expense of the euro, you need look no further than a trip to Montreal. There are more native French speakers in this cosmopolitan capital of Quebec than anywhere else outside Paris, and it is a city with a strong culture all its own as well. There is plenty to do and see here, and if you are staying in one of the cheap hotels in Montreal that is close to downtown you can walk just about anywhere you will want to go.

Montreal is not a small city, but the city center is compact and easily explored on foot. Unfortunately, the majority of the cheap hotels in Montreal are not going to be located right in the downtown area. You will find some bargains and mid-range options downtown, but truly budget options are going to be located primarily in areas like the Latin Quarter – unless you are interested in trying a bed and breakfast. You can sometimes get an even better deal on B&B style hotels or guest houses, so be sure to check those as well.

Downtown Montreal and the city’s Old Town are the two areas where you are likely to spend most of your time. The Old Town comes complete with cobbled streets and historic buildings, great restaurants and charming shops. Its picturesque placement on the river makes it even more enjoyable as a place to just wander. Downtown has lots of museums and other attractions, as well as a great Chinatown. And for a little escape from the city, be sure to head to Jean-Drapeau Park.

Some of the cheap hotels in Montreal which you should look into for your trip are Abri du Voyageur Hotel (downtown, 34 rooms, cheapest rooms with shared bathrooms, near subway and bus stops, free WiFi), Hotel La Tour Centre Ville (close to downtown, indoor pool & sauna, fitness center, indoor parking available, on-site restaurant & bar, laundry facilities), Hotel du Manoir St-Denis (in Latin Quarter, free continental breakfast, free WiFi, 1 block from bus and metro stations), Armor Manoir Sherbrooke (in Latin Quarter, Old Town is 15 minute walk away, WiFi access available, parking available near hotel, some suites with whirlpool tubs, free continental breakfast), and Hotel de Paris (between downtown and Latin Quarter, located in 2 restored mansions, free WiFi access, free continental breakfast, indoor & outdoor parking available, on-site bistro restaurant).
