The state of Virginia boasts all kinds of attractions for all types of travelers. There is a short coastline and beautiful mountains to satisfy outdoorsy people, historically important sites and towns for the history buffs, and excellent museums and galleries for culture vultures. Because the state is not terribly large, you can easily explore the whole thing in a couple of weeks – you can even use one of the cheap hotels in Virginia as your home base to see lots of the state’s attractions without constantly being on the move. In fact, if you are planning a visit to both nearby Washington D.C. and some places in Virginia, you can often save money by staying in a Virginia hotel as opposed to an expensive D.C. hotel.
Generally speaking, in the more touristy cities and towns there will be more cheap hotels in Virginia – because there will just be more hotels in those places, period. However, it is also true that most of the budget hotels will probably not be right in the centers of those popular towns. You may have to settle for a hotel in Virginia Beach or Colonial Williamsburg that is a bit of a walk (or a short bus ride) from the main attractions if you want to avoid paying through the nose for your accommodation.
