While the English weather may not always be sunny and warm, the English coastline is still dotted with plenty of old spa resort towns, including the Victorian town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire. (And if you do not have the song “Scarborough Fair” running through your head by now, you are a stronger person than we are.) It is not a large town, although it is the largest in the area, and its popularity as a spa resort dates back to the mid-1600s – so there are plenty of cheap hotels in Scarborough, in addition to big resort hotels.

The first spa hotel in Scarborough was built in the 1840s, but the success of the town as a spa resort has meant that the number of cheap hotels in Scarborough is higher than you might expect for a town of its size. And, as is the case in much of the United Kingdom, some of the best budget rooms can be found in what are called “guest houses” and “bed and breakfasts” instead of traditional hotels. These tend to offer a bit more personal attention and have fewer rooms, so if that is what you are looking for book early to make sure you get the place you want.

Besides the spa treatments you can enjoy in Scarborough, there are a few other attractions worth mentioning as well – because you cannot really spend all your time in a mud bath, can you? The remains of Scarborough Castle, dating from the 12th century, stand overlooking the water and although the castle was heavily damaged during World War I it is still quite an impressive sight. One of the more famous local hotels is the Grand Hotel, opened in the 1860s and the building in which novelist Anne Bronte died. Her grave is also in the town.

Some of the cheap hotels in Scarborough worth checking out for your stay are Mountview Hotel (8 rooms, breakfast included, 2-3 minute walk to Esplanade, near train & coach station), The Croft Hotel (breakfast included, children welcome, licensed bar & lounge), Donnington Hotel (breakfast included, 5 minutes from the beach, free off-road parking), Clarence Gardens Hotel (on-site bistro, breakfast & dinner available for a fee, licensed bar, short walk to the South Bay, close to beach & town center, free parking), and The Windmill (in an 18th century building with the town’s last remaining windmill, 5 minute walk from town center, 9 rooms, 2 apartments in the windmill itself, breakfast included).
