The English town of Newcastle upon Tyne is so named for the River Tyne which runs through the city’s heart – but the poor river’s name often gets left off the city’s name, as it gets shortened to simply Newcastle more often than not. And despite the fact that it is not usually on tourist itineraries, this city is incredibly pleasant to visit, with historic sights and a pretty downtown areas that is definitely worth investigating. And there are plenty of cheap hotels in Newcastle to choose from, too.

Newcastle’s downtown area is compact and easy to navigate on foot, so choosing from the cheap hotels in Newcastle’s city center is your best bet in order to explore the city. This former industrial center has more recently become a city known for its interesting architecture, cultural expressions of music and dance, and historic monuments.

In addition to the attractive city center, Newcastle upon Tyne also offers a look into England’s Roman past – there are remains of Hadrian’s Wall visible starting in the city and extending into the countryside, and remains of a Roman fort called Segedunum as well. With lots of nice galleries, museums, restaurants and shops to choose from downtown, Newcastle is an ideal destination for a long weekend city break.

Because Newcastle upon Tyne is not generally thought of as one of England’s premier tourist cities, you will find cheap hotels in Newcastle even in the downtown area. Some of the hotels you should consider are Jurys Inn Newcastle (three-star hotel in city center near all major attractions, part of a popular budget chain of hotels), Thistle Newcastle Hotel (114 rooms in an historic building opposite the train station), Premier Inn Newcastle Quayside (nice budget hotel right on the river), and Travelodge Newcastle Central (budget hotel in central Newcastle near the river).
