Cheap Hotels in Charleston
The city of Charleston in South Carolina is one of the premier Southern cities for vacationers, in part because of its coastal location and in part because of its historic feel. Unlike many cities in the South, Charleston’s city center suffered very little damage during the Civil War, and so instead of an overly modern downtown area you can still enjoy much of the city as it may have looked many years ago. And the good news is that there is a wide variety of accommodation options here – including plenty of cheap hotels in Charleston to choose from.
As you might expect, the hotel properties which overlook the water or are closer to the waterfront will often be more expensive than other places in the city. If you can get a room in one of the cheap hotels in Charleston that is downtown or within walking distance of the water, however, you will be perfectly happy. While a car is useful in exploring points outside the city, most people will be able to see the majority of the city’s sights just by walking to them – and this is especially true if you are staying in or near the city center.
Charleston’s downtown is incredibly charming and a delightful place to walk around in; many of the buildings date back to before the Civil War. There are many Civil War-related sights in this area, including Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began. The fort itself is no more than a ruin now, but as it is only a half-hour away by ferry and a decent museum to help you understand the ruins, it is certainly worth a visit. For something a little less heavy, check out any of the little beach towns around Charleston – both for shopping and for actually enjoying the sand and the surf.
Some of the cheap hotels in Charleston which you should consider for your trip are Motel 6 Charleston South (near downtown, on Savannah Highway, outdoor pool, laundry facilities, WiFi & internet access available, free morning coffee, pets allowed, kids stay free), La Quinta Inn Charleston Riverview (overlooking Ashley River, 1 mile from downtown, 175 rooms, free hot continental breakfast, free WiFi, free parking, laundry facilities, outdoor pool, pets allowed), Best Western Sweetgrass Inn (3 miles from downtown, free breakfast, pets allowed, outdoor pool, internet access available, fitness center), Quality Inn & Suites Patriots Point (at the entrance to Patriots Point Museum, minutes from downtown, 103 rooms, free WiFi access, free breakfast buffet, free 24-hour coffee, fitness center), and Hawthorn Suites (7 miles from downtown, free hot breakfast buffet, Monday-Thursday social hour, laundry facilities, fitness center, indoor pool, free WiFi & internet access, free parking).
